Potential CASA Volunteer FAQ
Will I be exposed to dangerous situations as a CASA Volunteer? In our 16
year history of working with children and families, no CASA volunteer has been injured while performing their duties.
Sumner County CASA volunteers practice a non-confrontational, impartial approach in working with the children and families.
This approach keeps CASA Volunteers safe!
Do I need prior experience to become a CASA
Volunteer? No, we will train. When the judge orders CASA’s involvement
he is looking for someone outside of the system to give him a unique view into these children’s life, an impartial view,
helping him to make better informed decisions in regard to these children’s future.
How many hours
will I be expected to volunteer each month? All cases are different, but the average time required
per month is between 10-15 hours. The Volunteer is required to see the child two hours per month.
The biggest time commitment will be the initial CASA training.
My work schedule includes
night time hours. How can I attend training? CASA offers 4 Saturday morning class
room training sessions throughout the year. CASA also offers an Independent Training Study.
Will
I be expected to attend court hearings? Yes, but we do understand that some of our volunteers
have full time jobs and things may arise. As long as you update your supervisor and submit your report
for court, a staff member can represent you. Most cases require court once every six months and it is something
you will most likely know about far enough in advance to make arrangements to attend.
